The basics

What is a flight reservation for visa?

A flight reservation for a visa application is a professionally prepared travel itinerary with a unique booking reference (PNR) issued by Onward Itinerary and verifiable via QR code. It is not an airline ticket and is not held in the airline’s reservation system. It proves to the embassy that you have planned and intended travel dates, a specific route, and identified passengers — without requiring you to purchase an expensive non-refundable ticket before your visa is approved.

Many embassies, notably Schengen consulates, ask for a flight reservation; others treat it as optional. It's different from a purchased airline ticket: embassies specifically recommend not buying an actual ticket until your visa is approved, because flight tickets are often non-refundable and visa rejections would cost you hundreds of dollars.

Every reservation we issue carries a unique PNR (Passenger Name Record) code and a QR code. The QR code links to our secure verification portal, giving embassies and third parties an instant way to confirm the document is authentic. Because the reference is issued by Onward Itinerary, it will not appear on the airline’s own website.

In Detail

Each step, in detail

1

Search your route

Takes 1–2 minutes · No account required

Start at the homepage search box. Enter your departure city (where you plan to travel from) and destination (the country you're applying for a visa to visit). You can type either the city name or the IATA airport code — our autocomplete will find it.

Select your departure date and, if your visa requires round-trip proof, your return date. The dates should match what you've declared on your visa application. Choose number of passengers and cabin class.

Click search. Within seconds you'll see real, live flight options from 400+ airlines including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Singapore Airlines, and many more.

  • Tip: A round-trip itinerary is usually expected for Schengen visas (the EU Visa Code lists a return-ticket reservation as evidence). UK guidance treats flight bookings as less useful evidence, and the US and Canada do not require them. Include one where it supports your plans.
  • Tip: Use one-way only if your destination allows it (some transit visas, for example)
  • Tip: Choose flight times that make sense (no overnight layovers in random cities) to avoid raising embassy flags
Common question: "Do I have to take the actual flight I select?" No. The reservation proves intent and satisfies the embassy requirement. You are free to book a different ticket later after your visa is approved.
2

Select flight and pay securely

Takes 30–60 seconds · Secure checkout

From the search results, pick the flight that best matches your travel plans. Click it to see details: airline, flight numbers, departure and arrival times, layovers (if any), and total journey time.

On the checkout page, enter passenger details exactly as they appear on the passport (first name, last name, passport number if required by the airline). Provide a valid email address where we'll send your PDF. Double-check the names — they cannot be changed after booking, and the embassy will compare them to your visa application.

Choose your payment method. We accept:

  • Credit/debit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover
  • PayPal: for instant payment without entering card details
  • Apple Pay / Google Pay: on supported devices
  • PayFast: local payment method for South African customers (EFT, Instant EFT, Masterpass)

All payments are SSL-encrypted and processed by certified payment gateways. We never store your full card details on our servers.

Service fee: The $10.00 fee covers the reservation preparation, our service overhead, and instant PDF delivery. There are no hidden charges — what you see at checkout is what you pay.
3

Receive your PDF with QR-verifiable PNR

Delivered in under 5 minutes · Check spam folder

Once your payment is confirmed, our system immediately prepares your flight reservation and generates your flight reservation PDF. The PDF is emailed to the address you provided during checkout.

Your PDF includes:

  • Passenger name(s) as provided
  • Verifiable PNR code (usually a 6-character alphanumeric reference)
  • Departure city, destination, date, and time
  • Airline name, flight number, and aircraft type
  • Return flight details (if round-trip)
  • Booking reference number and issue date
  • QR code for verification via our portal

You can verify your booking immediately by scanning the QR code on your PDF, or by entering your booking reference and surname at onwarditinerary.com/verify. The reference is issued by Onward Itinerary, so it will not appear on the airline’s own “Manage Booking” or check-in pages.

Most visa application centres require printed copies, so print the PDF (you can also keep it on your phone for reference). If you don't receive the email within 10 minutes, check your spam/junk folder. You can also use Manage Booking with your order reference to re-download the PDF anytime during the validity period.

Validity: The standard reservation ($10) stays verifiable for 30 days from issue. At checkout you can instead choose 48 hours ($5), 72 hours ($7), 3 months ($15) or 6 months ($20). Pick the option that covers your appointment and decision date.

FAQ

Common questions about the process

Answers to what travellers ask us most about how it works.

What is a flight reservation for a visa application?
A flight reservation is a professionally prepared travel itinerary with a unique booking reference (PNR) issued by Onward Itinerary and a QR code for third-party verification. It is not an airline ticket and is not held in the airline’s reservation system. It shows your intended travel dates, route, and passenger details to the embassy without requiring you to purchase an expensive non-refundable ticket before your visa is approved.
How long does the whole process take?
From landing on the homepage to receiving the PDF in your inbox: typically 3 to 5 minutes. The search and selection takes 1–2 minutes, payment 30 seconds, and PDF generation/delivery is automatic.
Is the PNR verifiable?
Yes. Every document we issue carries a unique booking reference and a QR code. Scan the QR with any phone camera, or enter the reference at onwarditinerary.com/verify, to confirm authenticity instantly. The reference is issued by Onward Itinerary, so it will not appear on the airline’s own “Manage Booking” or check-in pages.
Which embassies accept these reservations?
Customers use our documents for visa applications worldwide, submitted at centres such as VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International, CGI Federal and Capago. Acceptance is decided by each consulate, so check your checklist.
What if I need to change my travel dates?
You can move your reservation to a new date or flight yourself in Manage Booking for a non-refundable change fee (currently $7). For a new route, a fresh booking is required.
Do I need an account to book?
No account required. You only need to provide passenger names, travel dates, route, and a valid email where your PDF will be sent. The entire process is guest-checkout.
What payment methods are accepted?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay, and PayFast (for South African customers). All transactions are SSL-encrypted and processed by certified payment gateways.
Can I get a refund?
Yes — you can request a full refund any time before you download your PDF. Once you’ve downloaded the PDF, the service is considered delivered and becomes non-refundable (the reservation has been issued, a PNR assigned, and the QR verification record is live on our portal). If something looks wrong with your order before you download it, email [email protected] — we’ll either fix it or refund you, your choice.
